about the artist:

Abigail Nick is from Tomah, Wisconsin. She enjoys reading, traveling, and basically all arts and crafts. She never planned on being an artist even though everyone else in her life knew one day she would be. Abby’s preferred mediums are graphite, oil paint, and watercolor. She creates art based on her real-life experiences. Her work tends to strive to capture the beauty found in the world along with stylized portraiture. Abby works from photo references she has taken to create her own vision. She is still striving to find her niche and place in the art scene, and because of this she stays open to what the future has to hold and tries her best not to stress too much about plans. For now, she is working towards graduation and is looking into graduate school programs.

Artist Statement

Creating has been a part of who I am for as long as I can remember. Just the sheer act of mark making was important to me. As I grew older, I channeled the hard, difficult, and confusing parts of my mind into creating. My main focus has always been on the human figure, as I feel the figure captures more than words ever could. I have always had a hard time expressing myself and had a hard time talking about anything deep, so I drew it, I painted it, I got it out some other way. I have never thought of art as being something I would pursue and now that I am, I feel like I am playing catch up. My work has always been something I do only for my eyes, and for me, without the thought of someone else seeing it, but now that my work could be on view for more people than myself, it is intimidating. In my work I have been exploring different techniques and subject matters. I want to explore deeper into the human experience, the good, the bad, and the ugly. I want to convey life and the hard aspects that people don’t want to talk about along with the amazing experiences people do not want to shut up about. The decision to become an artist and fully dive into this passion has left me with a lot of questions, but the main one being why? The thought of why has been daunting, but luckily throughout the human experience I get to figure out that question and I have more time to answer the question of why.
