Hello, I’m Skylar!
I am a porcelain ceramic artist and Copic marker illustrator based in Woodbury, MN. Inspired by Japan, landscapes, fantasy, and fiction, I use jewel tones and bright colors to bring my designs to life. My pottery consists of wheel-thrown functional work with primarily smooth textures and simple imagery using my inspiration to create both form and design. My illustrations include both fictional scenes and those inspired by life around me.
I am primarily a ceramic artist using wheel-thrown porcelain clay with glazes to create utilitarian pottery. Inspired by Japanese wares, video games, fantasy stories, and nature, I use my pottery as a way to merge these ideas and create something different. I use porcelain because of the texture it has and because of the white result. It is smooth and soft to use so I do not feel like I am cutting up my hands at the wheel, plus the color allows a bright palette to be achieved without being dulled by underlying tones.
I also use Copic markers to create images on paper. While this is also primarily inspired by the same as my pottery, I also have made work based on the singer Amy Lee. I enjoy this medium because of how smooth and blended the final product looks due to the alcohol-based ink. Picking out the colors used and combining them to create new ones I need makes me feel proud of the result. With either medium, I enjoy the process itself: making something from the materials, and seeing it come together.
